A traffic stop on Applebutter Road last month resulted in charges for a Mount Bethel man, who Lower Saucon Township Police said Tuesday was found to be in possession of 59 grams of marijuana.

According to a police news release, Isreal Alvarez, of the 400 block of Belvidere Corner Road, was stopped shortly after 11:30 p.m. Aug. 11 near Lower Saucon Road because he was allegedly observed straddling the center line as he drove down Applebutter Road.

Police said an officer then detected a strong odor of both burnt and unburnt marijuana and ordered Alvarez to perform field sobriety tests, which he failed.

A blood test confirmed the presence of marijuana chemicals in Alvarez’s blood, according to police, who said they Alvarez’s license was suspended for a prior DUI conviction.

In addition to driving under the influence of a controlled substance, police said Alvarez has been charged with possession of marijuana, driving on a suspended license (DUI-related) and a traffic violation.
