The undefeated Saucon Valley Panther wrestling team took another step toward a fifth consecutive Colonial League title Wednesday night with a competitive 41-22 victory over the Bangor Slaters. Winning 9 of the 14 bouts and earning bonus points in five of those matches, the 2016-17 Panthers stayed perfect and improved to a remarkable 16-0 record.
Saucon has now won 54 straight in the Colonial League and stand alone at the top of the standings again this year with their 6-0 record. With only two matches to go before the league tournament to be held at Catasauqua Area High School on Monday, Jan. 30, the Panthers continue to strive for five; a fifth consecutive Colonial league title.
Against the Slaters, the Panthers earned pins from Josh Jones (120), Paul Miller (126), Devin Fontanez (220) and Trey Polak (285). Jones’ pin came in only 31 seconds.
In addition to the falls, the Panthers also received bonus points from junior Jason Jones (145). Jones didn’t give up a single point along the way to locking up a tech-fall against the Slater’s Charlie Mento. He used only one takedown and a series of tilts in just over three minutes to secure his 16-0 “mercy-rule” victory.
Panthers Dane Druckenmiller (113), Justin Kyra (132), Angelo Mahaffey (138) and Dane Csencsits (160) all fought their way to decisions against the Slaters.
Druckenmiller bumped up in weight from his usual 106 pound spot and was able to turn Jayce Gonzalez to his back in the third period for two near-fall points which were the only points scored in the bout. The gutsy Panther was able hold on for the win in the 113 pound weight class.
Justin Kyra was victorious using three takedowns to get the better of senior Slater, Blake McNew. Kyra, a sophomore, is flying under the radar with a quiet 17-3 record so far this season.
Saucon Valley junior Angelo Mahaffey looked sharp as he put together a first period takedown with a couple of escapes and three, third period near fall points to defeat Bangor’s Paul Mastrogiovanni 7-2.
Freshman Dane Csencsits also looked good for the Panthers as he held on for a 10-8 win against Slater senior Gaelenn Happel. Csencsits continued to earn his wings by stringing together five takedowns in his winning effort.
