The Saucon Valley Panthers followed-up last week’s tense, opening night Colonial League match with Notre Dame by putting together a dominating performance over the visiting Catasauqua Rough Riders.  Tuesday’s competition with the Roughies started at 7 p.m and was over at 8 p.m.  Coach Shirk and his Saucon Valley Panther wrestlers made super-quick work of Catty and cruised to a 60-12 Colonial League victory.

This one may have been over before it even started.  Catasauqua forfeited four of the fourteen bouts to the high-powered Panthers.  Saucon was gifted twenty-four points courtesy of Catty no-shows against Nick Rosengrant (145), Dane Csencsits (195),  Jared Harka (220) and Nick Warnke (285).  In return, the Panthers fielded a lineup that included a hole at 138 lbs.

Saucon Valley won eight of the nine matches that were actually contested. In seven of those eight victories, the Panthers earned bonus points.  Catty sophomore Austin Brett managed a pin for the Rough Riders at 120 lbs.

In addition to the forfeits, Saucon Valley received a pair of first-period pins from senior Josh Jones (126) and freshman Dante Mahaffey (152).  Jones and Mahaffey both recorded their falls in under a minute.

The Panther grapplers were in a point-scoring mood.  Junior Matt Arciuolo (160) used a sweet “sweep-single” and an assortment of near-fall points to build a 20-4 advantage and earn a second-period technical-fall.  In addition, Chris Arciuolo (106), Cael Markle (113), Ty Csencsits (170) and Braydyn Lugardo (182) all looked good winning major-decisions.  Arciuolo, Markle and Csencsits are freshmen, Lugardo is a junior.  The other Panther points came from Kevin Dyer’s 10-6 decision in the 126 lb. weight class.  Dyer is also a junior.

Coach Shirk said it: “Dante picked up the first varsity win in his career.  He went out there and executed moves that we have been working on all year.  He wrestled with a lot of energy and was looking for bonus points from the beginning.”
