Northampton Community College (NCC) has been designated a “Voter-Friendly Campus” by national nonpartisan organizations Campus Vote Project and NASPA-Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education, the school announced Monday.

The initiative held participating institutions accountable for planning and implementing practices that encourage their students to register and vote in the 2018 elections and in the coming years, according to a news release.

“The mission of the Voter Friendly Campus designation is to bolster efforts that help students overcome barriers to participating in the political process,” it said. “NCC was evaluated based on a statement of interest, action plan, execution of that plan and evaluation efforts. The Voter Friendly Campus designation is valid through December 2020.”

“NCC’s efforts to break down barriers and empower students with the information and tools they need to participate in the political process puts the civic mission of higher education into action,” the Voter Friendly Campus team said.

As part of the college’s effort to be designated a voter friendly campus, NCC said it helped students register to vote for the first time, change their voter registration or vote via absentee ballot.

NCC said it “has made a strong statement about the civic mission of higher education to prepare students to be engaged participants in our democracy and is excited to continue engaging students. Making voting easier, making our democracy stronger, and citizenship meaningful, means ensuring that student voters have a voice.”

The institutions designated Voter Friendly Campuses are part of a select group of campuses from around the country that participated and received the designation, according to the news release. To learn more about this designation and its significance for NCC, visit VoterFriendlyCampus.org.

The only community college in Pennsylvania to offer on-campus housing, NCC’s main campus is located in Bethlehem Township, Pa.

NCC has three campuses and serves more than 35,000 students, granting degrees, certificates and diplomas in more than 100 fields.
