After a fairly tranquil dual holiday weekend, the weather later in the day Monday was forecast to turn troublesome.
Tuesday’s spring-like weather seemed to confirm what Punxsutawney Phil predicted Sunday, with highs reaching nearly 60 degrees in places. The National Weather Service, however, is attempting to throw a wet blanket on their furry rival’s prognostication with a forecast that calls for an abrupt return to winter.
The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for the Lehigh Valley including the Hellertown area for a wintry mix of precipitation overnight Monday and into early Tuesday.
Business was already brisk at the Lower Saucon Township Giant–a perennially popular destination for many local winter storm preppers–even before the National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory for the Lehigh Valley Wednesday for 2 to 4 inches of snow followed by freezing rain, sleet and possibly rain.
Although temperatures will be unusually mild Friday–with highs in the low 60s–they are forecast to plummet from near 50 at around midnight to around 30 by 7 a.m., with icing developing rapidly toward daybreak Saturday on gusty north to northwest winds, according to the National Weather Service.
The National Weather Service is warning Lehigh Valley residents that snow and ice expected Saturday and Sunday will cause treacherous driving conditions.
A combination of freezing rain and sleet could create slick travel conditions in the Saucon Valley area Sunday.
Tuesday morning’s commute to work and/or school could be an icy one due to light freezing rain, according to weather forecasters.
A messy storm that blew through Pennsylvania Tuesday night brought rain and rising temperatures to the Saucon Valley, but also ice and accidents.
Just in time for the start of a long holiday weekend (for most), the National Weather Service says there will be a chance for freezing rain Friday night.
