Celebrate the American Worker, Union This Labor Day

It’s a day filled with picnics, family and the often regretful, unofficial conclusion of summer. 

However, the day is so much more. Labor Day is celebrated on the first Monday of September every year. It’s a day dedicated to the social and economic struggles and achievements of the American worker. The first Labor Day parade was held Sept. 5, 1882 in New York City to celebrate trade and labor organizations, as well as host a festival for the families of workers.

State Police Plan Labor Day Weekend DUI Checkpoint

Pennsylvania State Police at Bethlehem said Wednesday that they will conduct a sobriety checkpoint somewhere in Lehigh County or Northampton County between Sept. 4 and Sept. 7, during the Labor Day holiday weekend. Police said in a news release that the checkpoint will be used to identify motorists exhibiting “behaviors normally associated with alcohol or drug-impaired drivers.” “The goal of a sobriety checkpoint is to reduce the number of alcohol and drug-related fatal and serious crashes, and to reduce the number of intoxicated drivers on Pennsylvania’s highways,” they added.

2015-2016 SVSD Calendar Released

The Saucon Valley School Board voted Tuesday to adopt the district’s calendar for the 2015-2016 school year. The new school year will begin on Monday, Aug. 31, although board members Edward Inghrim and Sandra Miller said they oppose scheduling the first day of school before Labor Day, which is Monday, Sept. 7. Saucon has not had a post-Labor Day start of the school year in a number of years.
