The SVSD campus was more alive than usual Friday after school with the official start of the 2016-2017 PIAA winter sports season. According to Panther Athletic Director Bob Frey, about 220 students have registered from grades 7-12 to participate in Saucon Valley School District winter sports. The kids were working hard all over campus this afternoon and evening preparing for a new season.

SV winter sports include:

Junior High wrestling coach Andy Koch showing the importance of a good stance.

Coach Ed Kolosky is back and reunited with long time assistant Lach Peeke in the natatorium with the Saucon swimmers.

SV basketball coach Matt Brown looks on to make sure the timing of the double-screen is set properly.

SV junior high basketball coach Scott Roberts emphasizing quick ball movement.

Coaches Marty Lewis and Phil Russell had the middle school boys basketball players lined up and working on their passing.

Coach Jerry Calabrese had the high school girls basketball team start their practice with ball handling drills.

Coaches Roger Ochse, Joann Ochse and Scott Guidos working layups with the middle school girls.

The Panthers open with an assortment of scrimmages after Thanksgiving. Official basketball and swimming competitions start Friday Dec. 9. Wrestling begins their season with a Colonial League showdown with Pen Argyl Dec. 13.

It’s an exciting time for these winter athletes, as they ready themselves for the competitive journey through the winter season. It is also an exciting time for Saucon Source, as we are looking forward to bigger and better coverage of Saucon Valley sports this season. Stay tuned for more!

Best of luck to all the Panthers! The Source is with you!
