Local Schools Pitching in to Help Hurricane Harvey Victims

Est. Read Time: 2 mins

If you want to help the victims of the devastation caused by Hurricane Harvey in Texas, the Saucon Valley School District has organized relief efforts in which you can participate.

Scenes of utter devastation caused by historic flooding have become common in the Houston area, where as much as 50 inches of rain from Hurricane Harvey inundated one of the most populous cities in the U.S. As much as a third of Harris County, where Houston is located, was reportedly under water as of Wednesday.

Middle school principal Ken Napaver announced the efforts in an email Thursday.

Napaver said there was a “great turnout” at a special meeting at the school Wednesday night, at which ideas for how to help victims of the epic flooding caused by Harvey were discussed.

“There will be several opportunities for you to give in the relief effort,” Napaver said.

From Friday, Sept. 1 to Friday, Sept. 8, parents and area residents can send in or drop off non-perishable items (see the list below) at the middle school office during regular business hours, between 7 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.

Saucon Valley High School volunteers will also be collecting monetary donations for hurricane relief during Friday night’s football game, which is at 7 p.m. in the school district stadium.

Napaver said that as additional relief plans develop, he will continue to share information.

Items that are urgently needed in the Houston area, which can be dropped off at the middle school office, include the following:

Saucon Valley elementary students will also be collecting change for the next two weeks for the local humane society, to help with displaced animals in Texas. Change for the drive can be dropped off outside the school at Doggy Dao and Cat’s Meow, 1238 Main St., Hellertown.

If you know of a local relief drive for the victims of the hurricane, please post details about it on Saucon Source’s free events calendar (log in or register a new account to post) or email information to josh@sauconsource.com.
