In their second matchup of the 2014 season–and with the opportunity to play for the District 11 AAA championship on the line–the Sauco
n Valley football team mounted an impressive come-from-behind offense to beat Southern Lehigh 20-17 on the Spartans’ home turf in Center Valley Saturday night.
Both teams came into the game with 9-1 records, with the Panthers having beaten Southern Lehigh on Sept. 12.
Saturday’s game began with the Spartans taking a 7-0 early on. That lead increased to 14-0 with a second So. Lehigh touchdown in the second quarter, but shortly after that the tenor of the game changed.
Saucon began a major comeback midway through the second quarter, with a touchdown with 5:32 remaining on the clock. With just seconds to go in the first half, the Panthers scored another touchdown to tie the score at the half, to the delight of their large legion of fans–some of whom kept tabs on the game via the Saucon Source Facebook page.
With 3:30 left in the third quarter, Southern Lehigh again took the lead by scoring a field goal.
Shortly after that, however, the Panthers again took the lead with a touchdown, and the team was able to fend off the Spartans until the clock ticked down to zero.
Saucon Valley will take on the Bethlehem Catholic Golden Hawks in the District 11 AAA championship game next weekend.
