Northampton County Coroner Zachary Lysek was at the scene of a two-alarm house fire at 1426 E. University Avenue in the University Heights section of Lower Saucon Township Tuesday morning.
A bystander reported that the man who lived in the home is elderly and lived alone.
As of noontime, the house–which is at the corner of E. University and Connolly avenues–remained surrounded by fire scene tape, and members of both Se-Wy-Co and Southeastern fire companies could be seen walking in and around it.
An acrid smell of smoke hung in the air around the home, which is heavily charred and has most of its windows broken out. Debris littered the snow-covered yard.
According to a news release issued by Se-Wy-Co Fire Co. early Tuesday morning, the fire was first reported at 10:56 p.m. Monday night.
In addition to Se-Wy-Co and Southeastern, firefighters from Dewey Fire Co. No. 1, Steel City, Upper Saucon Township, Nancy Run, Eastern Salisbury and Springtown also responded to help contain the blaze, which was visible from Rt. 378 in a photo posted on the Lehigh Valley Breaking News Facebook page.
The fire was initially mistakenly reported as being at 1419 E. University Avenue.
According to the news release, the cause of the fire remains under investigation by Se-Wy-Co, the Lower Saucon Township Police Department and the Pennsylvania State Fire Marshal, and additional information may be released about it later Tuesday.
There were no injuries to firefighters who battled the blaze on a cold and snowy night, amid widespread icy conditions.
