RCN: ‘Sun Outages’ Could Disrupt TV Viewing

In an email to customers Friday, RCN warned them that their television viewing could be disrupted in the coming days because of an astronomical phenomenon.

“Between Feb. 29 and March 8, you may notice a very brief interruption in TV service due to sun outages,” the local cable provider said.

According to RCN, “these outages are caused by a phenomenon called ‘solar satellite interference’ or ‘sun outages'” and cause television interference twice a year. Sun outages occur “when the sun moves directly behind a TV satellite and interferes with its signal,” the email explained.

“TV service, including programs recorded using your DVR, will be interrupted for only a few minutes and will then resume automatically,” RCN said. “Internet and phone services are not affected.”
