The National Weather Service is warning Lehigh Valley residents that a combination of high heat and humidity could produce heat indexes close to 100 degrees Fahrenheit on Thursday and Friday, July 14-15.
In a Hazardous Weather Outlook statement issued Tuesday, the NWS said the area where heat indexes could reach triple digits includes Upper Bucks County, Warren County, Lehigh County, Northampton County, Berks County, and Western Montgomery County.
A heat index is a representation of the “real-feel” temperature that factors in both temperature and relative humidity.
When heat indexes approach 100 degrees, conditions outside can become dangerous, particularly for small children, the elderly and pets. If you plan to be outside for an extended period of time, be sure to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water and take frequent breaks if you are engaged in strenuous physical activity.
In Hellertown, Thursday’s high temperature is forecast to be 91 degrees and Friday’s is forecast to be 93 degrees.
There is a 40 percent chance of thunderstorms Thursday and a 30 percent chance of storms Thursday night, according to the NWS forecast.
Dewey Fire Company’s annual carnival will be open daily through Saturday from 6 to 10 p.m.
The Hellertown Pool is open daily (weather permitting) from noon to 7 p.m.
