Lower Saucon Township Police issued a rabies alert to residents Thursday evening.

In a news release, police said two cats in the area of Dartford Road were recently confirmed to have rabies.

One resident was bitten by one of the rabid cats, police said.

According to the news release, there are two types of rabies that affect felines.

“Furious rabies is characterized by extreme behavioral changes, including overt aggression and attack behavior,” police said. “Paralytic rabies, also referred to as dumb rabies, is characterized by weakness and loss of coordination in the cat, followed by paralysis.”

Any resident who sees a cat or other animal acting strangely should stay away from it and contact Lower Saucon police at 610-759-2200.
