St. Luke’s University Health Network has announced that William R. McCafferty III, D.O., has joined St. Luke’s Orthopedic Care as a Primary Care Sports Medicine physician and is accepting new patients.

As a primary care sports medicine physician, McCafferty specializes in non-surgical care, concussion management, acute treatment for sprains and strains, overuse injuries, return-to-play decisions after injury or illness, and pre-participation sports examinations.

“I want to help people as best as I can–really drill down to find out what the patient needs to get the best results for them,” McCafferty said.

Dr. McCafferty, a Philadelphia native, graduated from Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, completed his residency at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Jacksonville, Fla., and practiced family medicine in Massachusetts before accepting a fellowship at St. Luke’s for Primary Care Sports Medicine.

“I love seeing the tangible results in sports medicine,” he said of choosing his specialty. “Most injuries don’t need surgery. People come in to see me with their weekend warrior stuff. You inject someone’s shoulder and you see if it’s going to help or not immediately by conducting a functional capacity test after the injection.”

During his fellowship, McCafferty worked with athletic teams from Moravian College and Liberty High School. Since re-joining St. Luke’s he is working with the football teams from Allen High School and Dieruff High School.

“I had worked in primary care for three to four years before I did my fellowship,” he said. “St. Luke’s is the best network I’ve been associated with in terms of treating their patients and how they treat their physicians. I love the team atmosphere here. It makes you feel very welcomed.”

Dr. McCafferty enjoys weight training and playing video games when not spending time with his wife, Diedra E. McCafferty, D.O., a wound-care specialist with St. Luke’s, and their two daughters.
