A fight at E. High and Courtright streets in Hellertown ended less violently than it could have when an off-duty state trooper happened upon the scene, intervened and held one of the alleged combatants at gunpoint while calling 911 early Thursday morning, according to published media reports that cite police and court records.

According to an article published by Lehigh Valley Live Thursday, Anh Tuan Tran Nguyen, 21, of the 300 block of E. High Street, had sent threatening phone and text messages to an ex-girlfriend, her current boyfriend and a third person, and wanted to meet them at his home, where he allegedly confronted them with a stolen .45 caliber handgun that he tried to hide in his waistband.

Nguyen’s ex was able to disarm him and run off with the gun, which was when the fight that drew the attention of the state trooper allegedly ensued between her two companions and Nguyen, the story indicated.

When police arrived, the state policeman was holding Nguyen and one of the other men at gunpoint near Courtright and Leonard streets, which is a block from where the fight began, the Morning Call reported.

After being arrested, Nguyen was arraigned before District Judge David Tidd on charges of simple assault, aggravated assault, terroristic threats, harassment, theft of a firearm and carrying a concealed firearm without a license, and committed to Northampton County Prison in lieu of $60,000 bail, according to court records.
