Farmers’ Market Sunflower Contest Winners Named

The Saucon Valley Farmers’ Market’s popular annual Sunflower Seed Head contest sponsored by Lost River Caverns and judged by cave co-owner/market volunteer committee member Beverly Rosewicz was held in September.

First place youth category winner James Hall with his prize-winning sunflower seed head

James Hall was the first place winner in the youth category, with a sunflower seed head that measured 17.75 inches in diameter. Andrew Chikotas won second place, and Lauren Soltysiak won third place in the youth category.

In the children’s category, GianLuca Carbonetto won first place, Megan Kuronya won second place and Dylan Kuronya won third place.

In the adult category, Anita Soltysiak won first place with a sunflower seed head that measured 12.25 inches in diameter, and Gina Gill was awarded second place.

The Saucon Valley Farmers’ Market is held weekly in Water Street Park, Hellertown, on Sundays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. through late November.

Next on the market’s special events schedule are the People’s Choice Cabbage Fest (Oct. 9) and its Honey Fest (Oct. 16).

During Cabbage Fest, cabbage facts will be posted around the market at participating vendors, including Rush Apiaries, Bechdolt’s Orchard, Flint Hill Farms & Educational Center, Art Cafe, Peanut Butter & More, Coffee Roasters, Tomblers Bakery, Mediterra, The Lavender Farmette, Fairfield Farms, Wayfare Baker, Epic Acre Farms, Holben Farms, Moongate Farms, Aunt Jack’s Real Home Baking and Couch Pota’doh.

Fifteen chefs who have created cabbage dishes ranging from Fusion Halupki to Ecuadorean Cabbage Soup to Polish Noodles & Cabbage will be judged by attendees who will pay $3 per person to taste and judge the dishes. Other dishes on the tasting menu will be Cabbage Cake with Yogurt & Honey Frosting, Cabbage Lasagna, Cabbage and Bacon Peanut Butter, Cabbage and Bacon Cheese, French Cabbage Dish, Cabbage Pizza and more.

Prizes will be awarded to the winning chefs.
