Dodgeball in epic form is coming to Hellertown.

At Monday’s borough council meeting, Mayor David Heintzelman announced that a charity game between the Hellertown Police Department and the eighth grade class at St. Theresa School will be played Sunday, May 5 following the 11 a.m. mass at the church.

The mayor at first joked to council that he is “too big” to play in the game, but then confirmed that he will play with the police.

Since the goal in dodgeball is to hit a member of an opposing team with the ball–knocking them out of the game–being petite can be an advantage when playing.

Heintzelman said the winning team will have money donated to a charity of their choice.

“It’s exciting,” he said. “It’s exciting to see kids get involved.”

He added that he plans to bring the charity dodgeball game to other churches in the borough in the future.

A high school dodgeball game is played in a memorable scene in the 1988 film “Hairspray.”
