Two well-traveled Hellertown borough streets will be repaved this summer, public works director Barry Yonney told borough council Monday evening.
Yonney said Constitution Avenue from Walnut Street to Durham Street will be resurfaced, along with Whitaker Street on the other side of town.
Constitution Avenue is frequently traveled by Mountainview residents. It also “gets a lot of (school) bus traffic and it has been breaking down,” Yonney said.

“Some roads are deteriorating faster than others,” he observed. “Why they are, I don’t know.”
Yonney said that not rushing to complete paving projects ensures a better end result, and told council that although the borough is now at the end of an aggressive 10-year repaving program, he recommends continuation of the program in order to maintain the roads in their current, improved condition.
“I think that’s one thing we can all be proud of,” borough council president Tom Rieger said of the roads.
The estimated cost for this summer’s paving projects is $150,000.
Council unanimously approved a motion to put the projects out to bid.
In other business, council adopted resolutions authorizing the installation of pedestrian countdown indicators at four different intersections, as part of a Main Street pedestrian safety project.
The four Main Street intersections that will receive the indicators are:
- Main and Walnut streets
- Main and Penn streets
- Main and Water streets
- Main and High streets
Also at the meeting, borough engineer Bryan Smith of Barry Isett and Associates confirmed that a contractor has been chosen for the Water Street Bridge replacement project, which is scheduled to begin in mid-June, after school ends. The bridge will be closed to traffic for two months during the replacement.
The next Hellertown Borough Council meeting will be held Monday, April 15 at 7 p.m. in the meeting room at Borough Hall. Meetings are open to the public and are normally held the first and third Monday of each month. Draft meeting agendas are published in advance on the borough’s website.
