Landmark Hellertown Laundromat to Close by End of June

Est. Read Time: 2 mins

Browns Laundromat has been a place to put your duds in suds in Hellertown since the 1990s.

If you enjoy watching your clothes soak in sudsy circles and then get tumble-dry soft at Browns Laundromat at 46 W. Water Street in Hellertown, you’ll soon have to go elsewhere for that experience.

The well-known laundromat near the corner of Water and Front streets will close by the end of June, according to a sign posted at the facility by its owners Bill and Gloria Brown.

“Thanks to all our customers for the use of our laundromat over the last 22 years or so,” the sign says. “We were notified by our landlord that he will need our spot, so we will have to be out by July 1. So what this means is we will still have full operations till June 17, 2019.”

According to the posted sign, after June 17 washing machines will be removed a few at a time, “and you may have a few more days if needed to do your wash.” However, all of the equipment will have to be removed from the building by the end of June.

“It wasn’t the cleanest, but it’s convenient and cheap,” said one resident of the narrow laundromat known for its wood-paneled interior and working class atmosphere.

Browns Laundromat is part of a retail-commercial complex along Water Street that is owned by Robert Singley and includes buildings that house a beer store, a new age shop, a commercial kitchen/catering business, a karate studio and a number of self-storage units.

Tell Us: Will you be sorry to see Browns Laundromat close? If you use it now, where will you wash your clothes? What, if anything, would you like to see open in its place?

The only other coin-operated laundromat in Hellertown is Lighthouse Laundry on Main at 1109 Main Street. It is open daily from 4 a.m. to 10 p.m., except for Christmas Day, and is the companion location to Lighthouse Washbasket & Dry Cleaners on Stefko Boulevard in Bethlehem.
