Fountain Hill Borough Council met Wednesday and the first order of business at the meeting was to hire several seasonal part-time staffers to help keep summer playground operations running smoothly.
Council president Leo Atkinson said the staff members will help maintain coverage for the summer playground program when other staff members are off.
Councilwoman Helen Halleman commented that she thought the pay rate of $10 an hour for the staffers is “a pretty good hourly rate.”
“They better shape up,” she said.
Atkinson said the hourly rate is in line with the position and what is typically paid by other employers, and said the new hires aren’t an added expense since they are going to be filling in for other employees.
The playground supervisor is “very enthusiastic about having a…positive program and getting the kids involved,” he said.
A motion to hire the part-time playground staff members passed by a vote of 6-0, with councilman Douglas Trotter Jr. absent.
In other business, Atkinson announced that the borough has received a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) award in the amount of $284,000 that will be used to repave Stanley Avenue as well as North Hoffert Street from Stanley to Jeter Avenue.
A $9,000 grant the borough has received will be used to help spruce up Lechauweki Springs Park, which is built on the site of a 19th century mineral springs hotel.

Fountain Hill Community Day will be held Saturday, July 20 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the playground and Atkinson said vendor applications are available at the Borough Hall main desk, which is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Vendors for the event will be set up on the park’s basketball court, and a section of Stanley Avenue in front of it will be closed to traffic during the event, which will feature food, children’s activities, raffles, police and fire demonstrations, a community yard sale, the Miller-Keystone Bloodmobile, face-painting sponsored by St. Luke’s Hospital and a community-building craft. The Stanley Avenue playground in Fountain Hill
