Boys Get to Experience Life as Hellertown’s ‘Mayor for the Day’

Est. Read Time: 3 mins

Henry and Alexander Denzel hold the Certificates of Recognition they received as ‘Mayors for the Day’ on Dec. 13. With them are Hellertown Police Chief Robert Shupp, Pastor Jerome Tauber of St. Theresa of the Child Jesus Roman Catholic Church, Principal Diana Tice of St. Theresa School and Hellertown Mayor David Heintzelman.

Two lucky lads who attend St. Theresa School in Hellertown were the envy of their classmates last week when they had a unique opportunity to experience what it’s like to be Hellertown’s “Mayor for the Day.”

Henry and Alexander Denzel got the thrill of their young lives when they were greeted at the school on Thursday morning by Mayor David Heintzelman and Police Chief Robert Shupp, who helped them begin their day by putting them in the back of a police SUV where they posed for photos in front of their excited classmates.

The opportunity to be “Mayor for the Day” was an auction item at a recent St. Theresa School fundraiser, where the Denzel boys’ parents bid on and won it.

More than just an opportunity to get out of school, Shupp said the day would also be filled with educational opportunities, such as a lesson in fingerprinting–not to mention an authentic coffee and donut break at the Dunkin’ Donuts located across the street from the police station.

The boys also enjoyed lunch at the Hellertown Diner with the mayor and the chief, as well as several borough officers. And they made police car Christmas ornaments with police department secretary Pat Tallarico and administrative assistant Tanya Stametz.

Henry and Alexander both received police-style knit caps that were custom-embroidered to read “Mayor for the Day: Dec. 13, 2018” and certificates of recognition from the mayor.

Dec. 13 happened to be St. Theresa School principal Diana Tice’s birthday, so students sang for her during the ‘Mayor for the Day’ festivities outside.

The Denzel brothers received their very own ride in the back of a Hellertown police SUV. Taking a photo is their proud mom, who said she hoped to use them for Christmas cards.

The Denzel brothers weren’t afraid to ham it up a bit for photos from ‘behind bars’ in the back of a Hellertown police SUV.

The boys’ classmates at St. Theresa School in Hellertown were very excited for them to be Hellertown’s “Mayors for the Day.”

Mayor David Heintzelman quickly helped the boys adjust to being dignitaries for a day.
