The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for Northampton County for snow changing to ice on Presidents Day.
According to the advisory issued Sunday afternoon, Saucon Valley residents can expect 2 to 4 inches of snow followed by sleet and up to a quarter inch of ice before a changeover to rain sometime Monday night or early Tuesday morning.
“Snow will begin by late morning Monday and continue throughout the day,” a statement about the advisory said. “The snow will mix with sleet and then change to freezing rain Monday evening. A prolonged period of freezing rain is expected before an eventual changeover to rain by Tuesday morning.”
Although the winter storm is expected to make travel hazardous, its impact may be minimized by the fact that schools and many government offices (including Hellertown borough offices) as well as some businesses will be closed for the holiday.
Anyone planning to travel during the early phases of the storm should be prepared for slippery roads and limited visibilities and use caution while driving, the NWS said.
The temperature Monday morning in Hellertown is forecast to be 7, climbing to a high of 31 by later in the day.
Lehigh and Upper Bucks counties are also under the winter weather advisory.
The storm is expected to be the most significant to affect the area since a blizzard dropped more than 30 inches of snow on east central Pennsylvania Jan. 22-23.
