Bridge on Lower Saucon Road to Close Until Further Notice

Est. Read Time: 2 mins

An aged two-lane bridge on Lower Saucon Road near Alpine Drive in Lower Saucon Township has been closed until further notice for repairs.

UPDATE (June 22, 2022): Township officials have announced the bid award for the bridge replacement project, which they said could be completed by the fall.

Note: An earlier published version of this article incorrectly identified the closed bridge as the PennDOT-owned bridge by Apple Street. The closed bridge is at Alpine Drive and is owned by the township. We apologize for any confusion the error may have caused.

If you regularly travel the section of Lower Saucon Road between Apple Street and Alpine Drive in Lower Saucon Township, the amount of time it takes to reach your destination will likely be greater beginning Friday at 9 a.m..

In an alert communicated by the Lower Saucon Township Police Department Thursday, it was announced that the bridge which spans the creek just north of Alpine Drive will be closed until further notice as of March 20.

The announcement did not indicate a reason for the closure, but said more information would be available on the township’s website.

A subsequent email alert issued by township police indicated that the bridge is being closed for repairs and at the recommendation of township engineers.

Traffic will be detoured around the closed bridge via Apple Street and Alpine Drive.

Along with the Lower Saucon Road bridge, the Meadows Road Bridge in Lower Saucon Township is also closed until further notice.

One key difference between the bridges is that while the Lower Saucon Road bridge is locally-owned, the historic Meadows Road Bridge is owned by Northampton County, which has not yet decided whether to replace it with a new span or restore the existing one.

Lower Saucon Township Police shared this map of a detour that will be in place around the closed bridge on Lower Saucon Road, just north of Alpine Drive. The detour follows Alpine Drive and Apple Street.
