The intersection of Main Street and Thomas Avenue in Hellertown borough is one of the six intersections that will receive pedestrian safety upgrades because of the grant funding. Installation of pedestrian-activated crossing lights is planned there.
The news for Main Street pedestrians in Hellertown was good Tuesday, when Gov. Tom Wolf announced that the borough has been awarded $792,427 to improve six unsignalized intersections on Main Street with pedestrian-activated crossing lights, ADA-compliant curb ramps and stamped crosswalks in order to increase pedestrian safety.
According to a news release, the funding will supplement an earlier $200,000 award from the Lehigh Valley Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO), which is the Lehigh Valley Planning Commission’s Lehigh Valley Transportation Study.
Not far away in Lehigh County, Coopersburg borough also fared well in terms of the announcement of grant funding by the governor Tuesday.
It was announced that Coopersburg borough is the recipient of $1,000,000 in funding for pedestrian and bicycling improvements to North Main Street and West State Street.
The improvements will include pedestrian crosswalks, curb/sidewalk/ADA improvements, pedestrian lighting and “sharrows” (also known as shared lane markings), the news release indicated.
