The members of Hellertown Borough Council Monday discussed possible solutions for what police say is a recurring problem: motorists driving the wrong way on Hampton Avenue, which is a one-way street heading west, away from Main Street.
The narrow street connects Main Street with Front Street and is properly signed as a one-way street, but Hellertown Police Chief Robert Shupp suggested that upon leaving, patrons may forget that it is one-way after time elapsed while they were inside one of the adjacent businesses.
One one side of the intersection of Hampton and Main is a medical/professional building owned by dentist Dr. Clarke Woodruff. On the other side of the intersection is Lost Tavern Brewing, a microbrewery.
Lost Tavern co-owner Rob Grim was at the meeting and said he planned to discuss the matter with Woodruff and report back to Shupp following their conversation.
Two possible solutions for the problem that were suggested at the meeting are:
- Stenciling “ONE WAY” in white paint on the roadway.
- Realigning the parking on the side of the dental office building, so it is angled on a northwest-southeast axis. The current parking spaces are oriented perpendicular to the building.
“We don’t want to make it all signs,” Shupp told council, referring to the option to post more “One Way” and “Do Not Enter” signs on the street.
He said he will report back to council regarding the matter after he hears back from Grim and Woodruff.
