Note: The following information is from the snow removal ordinance posted on the Borough of Hellertown’s website.

  • Property owners have 24 hours to remove snow and ice from the sidewalks around their properties from the time precipitation ceases to fall. In rare cases in which snow or ice is “frozen so hard that it cannot be removed without injury to the sidewalk or walkway,” the borough has the discretion to extend this timeline, however property owners must keep their walkways “strewn with ashes, sand, sawdust or other suitable material so as to be no longer dangerous.”

  • Snow and ice cannot be thrown into the streets.
  • Snow must not be placed anywhere it will “obstruct the free passageway on either the sidewalk and walkway or the abutting street.”
  • If the borough is required to clean a sidewalk, in addition to issuing the owner of the property a citation, the borough can bill the owner for the cost of the snow removal in addition to an administrative fee.
  • Violators of the snow removal ordinance can be fined up to $25 for their first violation, $100 for their second violation, $200 for their third violation and $1,000 for their fourth and subsequent violations, plus related costs. If found to be “in default of payment of said fine and costs” a violator could be subjected “to a term of imprisonment not to exceed 30 says.”
  • The borough’s police chief is to keep an annual written log of all snow removal violations.
  • In lieu of prosecution, the borough may issue a warning notice to a property owner. If the owner hasn’t removed the snow within 24 hours of receiving the notice, the borough will proceed with prosecution in accordance with the terms of ordinance.
  • Cars must be removed from designated snow emergency routes in the borough when a snow emergency is declared. The police department has the authority to tow cars at their owners’ expense during a declared snow emergency. The borough requests that residents remove their vehicles from all streets to help facilitate the cleaning of the streets after winter storms.
