A local Boy Scout who hopes to attain the rank of Eagle Scout received permission from Lower Saucon Township Council Wednesday to clear brush and remove several trees on land that is part of the historic Heller Homestead property.

“The project is to reclaim the barnyard,” to make it usable for special events that are often held at the homestead, explained Justin Morgandale.

The land has a slight grade to it and is currently “covered in invasive species of plants,” he said.

Morgandale said he and the other members of Boy Scout Troop 319 will easily be able to clear the brush, but he asked council if public works employees could assist with removing the trees, one of which is rather large.

Councilwoman Priscilla deLeon said she was hesistant to commit a township work crew to helping, and encouraged Morgandale to instead find adult volunteers.

It was at that point that without any prompting another attendee at the meeting walked up to the podium and told council he would be willing to volunteer his time and heavy equipment he owns in order to help the boys with the project.

John Hulsizer, of Steel City, said after the meeting that he wanted to ensure that the project would get a green light.

Morgandale said that in addition to the removal of plants and trees, a small fence will be erected along a property line at the rear of the barnyard.

He hopes to complete the work by May 30, he said.
