An accident in which a car struck a pole in the 1500 block of Main Street in Hellertown Tuesday night plunged parts of the neighborhood into darkness.
Several eyewitnesses said a transformer blew as a result of the accident, and Main Street was closed between High Street and Cherry Lane while crews worked to extinguish a resulting wire fire and restore power to the area.
“The car is pretty much embedded in the pole, and every time they go near it, the wires move and start to spark and explode,” wrote Rebecca Walser in a post on the Saucon Source Facebook page.
Witnesses including Walser also reported that one person removed from the car was taken away in an ambulance. The extent of the person’s injuries is unknown.
PPL has reportedly provided residents who lost power with an estimated service restoration time of 2:30 a.m. Wednesday.
This is one of several serious accidents to have occurred in Hellertown in recent days.
Then on Monday another accident occurred in the parking lot of Matey’s Crossroads Hotel, which is close to the scene of Tuesday’s accident.
