Progressive Waste Solutions Bethlehem Landfill announced that it is canceling its community open house event scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 3 due to the expected inclement weather.

High winds and rain in the forecast are the reason behind the cancellation, Bethlehem Landfill officials said.

There are no plans at this time to reschedule the event.

IESI’ Bethlehem Landfill will host an open house event on Saturday, Oct. 3 from noon to 4 p.m. at its facility at 2335 Applebutter Road in Lower Saucon Township.

The free event, which will be hosted rain or shine, is scheduled to include:

  • Chartered bus tours of the landfill
  • Entertainment from comedian/ventriloquist John Pizzi (a former contestant on NBC’’s “America’’s Got Talent””), whose performances are scheduled for 12:30 and 2:30 p.m.
  • Complimentary barbecue from 4 Bandits BBQ and a cafeteria tent
  • Children’’s games and prizes
  • Exhibits from environmental engineers and experts

““This is a great opportunity for our community to see the technology that protects our environment,”” said Bethlehem Landfill District Manager Al Schleyer in a news release. “”Visitors are always surprised to learn all that’’s involved with operating a waste-management facility.””

Open house attendees will have an opportunity to speak one-on-one with engineers and other environmental firms that design and manage the landfill’’s environmental controls, the news release indicated.

Limited parking will be available at the landfill on the day of the event. Overflow parking and a shuttle service will be available at Steel City Mennonite Church, 2137 Mixsell Ave., Bethlehem (Steel City).
