Saucon Valley resident Andrew Wieder, a cadet with the Civil Air Patrol (CAP) Squadron 904 in Quakertown, was promoted on May 31, 2016 to the grade of Cadet 2nd Lieutenant.
As part of this promotion he was also presented with the General Billy Mitchell Award, which is one of CAP’s most prestigious cadet honors and is comparable to the Eagle Scout ranking. This award has been in existence since 1964 and marks a coming of age for CAP cadets, preparing them for greater leadership responsibilities as cadet officers. To earn the Mitchell Award, cadets must pass comprehensive leadership and aerospace exams, as well as rigorous physical fitness tests and complete an encampment.
Andrew is 16 and a sophomore at Saucon Valley High School. He also volunteers as a Junior Firefighter with Se-Wy-Co Fire Company in Lower Saucon Township. He plans to continue with the CAP program through high school, with a goal of joining an ROTC unit in college and eventually becoming a commissioned military officer.
