A Hellertown police officer who not only protected but also touched many lives during his 19 years of service to the borough received a hero’s sendoff on his way to his final resting place Saturday.

Ofc. James F. “Jim” DeLeone Sr., who died unexpectedly July 8 in Virginia, was paid tribute to by the other members of his department as well as local volunteer first responders and Hellertown Legion Riders, who formed a cortege that accompanied his hearse from Ruggiero Funeral Home in Pen Argyl–where a visitation was held–back to Hellertown.

When the procession reached Hellertown Borough Hall and Detwiller Plaza, it paused underneath two fire company ladder trucks (Se-Wy-Co and Nancy Run) that were used to fly a huge American flag high above Main Street, and funeral director David Heintzelman opened the door of DeLeone’s hearse for a viewing of his flag-draped coffin in front of dozens of residents who were on hand to pay their final respects.

“Taps” was played and DeLeone’s coffin was saluted by his brethren in uniform during a brief ceremony.
