A proposal to form a new Gay Straight Alliance Club at Saucon Valley Middle School beginning this year is listed among items recommended for approval under the Personnel section of the March 28 Saucon Valley School Board agenda posted on the district’s website.

The club would be led by co-curricular volunteer advisor, music teacher Lauren Sakasitz, according to the agenda, which also includes a standard district disclaimer that “the Saucon Valley School District does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, age, sex, or handicap.”

Also on Tuesday night’s meeting agenda is a presentation under Education that will include recommendations from a volunteer inclusion committee formed late last year to help address recent issues involving bullying, harassment and racism in Saucon Valley schools.

The proposed Inclusion/Equity Draft Action Plan will be posted on the district website before the meeting, Supt. Monica McHale-Small said in an email.

These matters will be discussed just a week after a discussion about whether to approve an elective gender studies course at Saucon Valley High School divided board members and public opinion, with members of the community sharing their opinions about it–pro and con–in comments on the Saucon Source Facebook page.

The school board meeting will be held at 7 p.m. in the high school Audion room.
