Lower Saucon Man Named Fulbright Scholar at U. of Alabama

A Lower Saucon Township man who is a member of the University of Alabama Class of 2017 has received a prestigious Fulbright scholarship to study abroad in 2017-2018.

A Lower Saucon Township man who is a member of the University of Alabama Class of 2017 has received a prestigious Fulbright scholarship to study abroad in 2017-2018.

Jonathan Joyner will conduct a study in Sri Lanka on its recent civil war, according to a news release about his award.

He is a Blount Scholar majoring in international studies with a minor in French, and a commissioned officer in the U.S. Army.

Joyner is one of 14 University of Alabama students–a record number–who have been selected for Fulbright awards this year, the press release indicated.

The Fulbright Program is an American scholarship program of competitive, merit-based grants for international educational exchange for students, scholars, teachers and others, founded in 1946 by United States Senator J. William Fulbright.

Approximately 8,000 grants are awarded to students annually.

Joyner was a member of the Class of 2013 at Allentown Central Catholic High School, where he played football, according to archived online news sources.
