The hold has been extended on filming a documentary about racial tension and solutions for it in the Saucon Valley School District, acting superintendent Dr. Susan Mowrer-Benda said in an email Sunday, on the eve of the first day of the 2017-2018 school year.

After a number of parents questioned the wisdom of allowing Lincon Square Productions filmmakers to capture footage of students on the first day of school, especially in light of an unsolved police case involving an email that threatened a school shooting, Mowrer-Benda announced Friday that there would be no filming Monday.

“I would like to inform you that there will be no cameras or documentary crew filming on our campus for the remainder of the upcoming week while school is in session,” Mowrer-Benda said. “To this end, we are focusing on the arrival of our student body and the excitement of a new school year, new learnings and positive relationships.”

Mowrer-Benda also expressed optimism about the start of the school year, which has already been marked by several key athletic victories.

“The start of this school year is already off to a successful start with the enthusiastic return of our instructional staff and Friday night’s victory of our football team,” she wrote. “Our football players are not the only Saucon Valley athletes finding success. The Golf Team and Girls Tennis Team and musicians are active and off to a great start as well. We know there will be many more successes to come as we move through the school year.”

A special meeting of the Saucon Valley School Board to discuss the documentary and hear concerns from parents and members of the public is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 31 at 6:30 p.m. in the high school Audion room.
