The Saucon Valley Panthers faced off against against the Muncy Indians in the PIAA Team Championship Quarterfinals on Friday afternoon. The Panthers won 7 of the 14 bouts but stumbled, then fell 39-31 to the Indians.

It was a good start for Saucon Valley as they received almost 600 pounds of help from three of the four heaviest weight classes, with Jarrett Hirschbeck (182), Dane Csencsits (195) and Nick Warnke (285) all earning pins against their Indian opponents.

The Panther staff celebrates Warnke’s pin.

Panther record-holder for all-time wins, Jason Jones (145), was able to chip in six team points courtesy of a Muncy forfeit to him.

Jason’s brother Josh (126), who is a junior, worked for bonus points and earned a 16-5 major-decision.

Justin Kyra (138) and Angelo Mahaffey (152) each tallied decisions for Saucon Valley. Kyra won 9-3 while Mahaffey came out on top 3-1.

Junior Josh Jones on his way to a major-decision.

Angelo Mahaffey of Saucon Valley holds on for a 3-1 decision.

It was a most peculiar turn of events at the 132 pound weight class. With the score 27-22 in favor of Muncy, it looked like Muncy senior Joe Klock was on his way to secure a decision over Saucon’s Nick Rosengrant. However, after the final buzzer, Muncy was awarded a full six points instead of the standard three due to Saucon’s Nick Rosengrant being disqualified. In addition, the Panthers were penalized three team-points for “flagrant misconduct.” Instead of the score being 30-22 in favor of the Indians the scoreboard was adjusted to read 33-19. Nonetheless, the Panthers battled on from that point, outscoring the Indians 12-6 making it a 39-31 final.

Panther fans were on hand to support the team.

NEXT UP: The Panthers drop to the consolation bracket and will face Harbor Creek at 4 p.m. Saucon Valley will attempt to wrestle back to a 3rd Place finish. Harbor Creek is the #2 seed out of District X and were beaten by Southern Columbia 45-21.

Good luck Panthers, the Source is with you!
