Following a recall by Sunshine Mills Inc., Giant Food Stores announced Tuesday that it has removed Nature’s Promise Chicken & Brown Rice Dog Food from its shelves due to the potential for it to contain excess Vitamin D, which could cause renal failure in dogs.
The following products are included in the recall:
- Nature’s Promise Chicken & Brown Rice Dog Food 4 lb. with best by dates of Nov. 1, 2018 – Nov. 8, 2019
- Nature’s Promise Chicken & Brown Rice Dog Food 14 lb. with best by dates of Nov. 1, 2018 – Nov. 8, 2019

Giant said it “has removed all affected product from its shelves and urges customers to return the product to their local store for a full refund.”
The company said it has received no reports of illnesses to date, however customers should stop feeding the recalled products to their pets.
“Dogs ingesting elevated levels of Vitamin D may exhibit symptoms such as vomiting, loss of appetite, increased thirst, increased urination, excessive drooling and weight loss,” Giant said. “Vitamin D, when consumed at very high levels, can lead to serious health issues in dogs including renal dysfunction. Customers with dogs who have consumed any of the products listed above and are exhibiting any of these symptoms should contact their veterinarian.”
