The spread of COVID-19 has greatly affected workers both nationwide and in Pennsylvania. Gov. Tom Wolf’s statewide closure of non-life sustaining businesses in late March has forced many retail and small businesses, such as restaurants, to partially or fully close their doors, and in many cases, lay off workers.
The result has been an unprecedented surge in jobless claims from Pennsylvanians. So far, more than 1.3 million Pennsylvania workers have filed for unemployment. This amounts to more than 21 percent of the state’s workforce.
This week alone has seen an addition of more than 84,000 unemployment claims filed in Pennsylvania.
In spite of the large-scale loss of jobs, there are businesses and industries that are in urgent need of workers right now.
