Upper Saucon Police Warn of ‘DMV Scam’

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

A common scam targeting drivers is one in which someone pretending to be a government official attempts to deceive victims into handing over money. According to a local police department, one such scam has been occurring locally.

Upper Saucon Township Police said in a Crimewatch post that several residents have recently received suspicious text messages purporting to be from the Pennsylvania DMV, which is also known as PennDOT’s Driver and Vehicle Services department.

Police said the messages threaten to suspend the driver’s registration or license due to an unpaid traffic ticket.

“This is a scam,” they said.

Police noted that the sending number is not affiliated with any government agency, and that PennDOT “will never text (motorists) to demand payment or threaten legal action.”

As the messages contain a fraudulent link, police cautioned recipients never to click on or respond to them. Instead, they said the messages should be deleted immediately.

Questions or concerns about driver’s licenses, registration or traffic tickets should be addressed by contacting PennDOT.
