Mabel Lydia (Hill) Laurum (1937 – 2026)

Mabel Lydia (Hill) Laurum, 89, of Allentown, formerly of Bingen, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, at her residence. She was the beloved wife of the late Jules Bela Laurum. Born in Bingen, Lower Saucon Township, on Jan. 21, 1937, Mabel was a daughter of the late Edward J. Hill and Lelia (Weaver) Hill. Growing up, Mabel pumped gas, changed tires and did tune-ups alongside her father at their Bingen Garage. Mabel dedicated many years of her life working as a seamstress in the textile industry, where her skill and attention to detail were evident in every piece she created. She was a proud member of the International Ladies’ Garment Workers’ Union and also lent her talents to several local employers throughout her career. Mabel owned and operated Colonial Supply Company, a wholesale jewelry, watch and clock repair company in Allentown. A faithful member of Ebenezer New Reformed Church in Bethlehem, Mabel found joy in her church community and lived a life rooted in kindness and devotion. Mabel had musical abilities, playing boogie woogie on the accordion and piano. She enjoyed going to Jolly Joe Timmer Grove while dancing and singing. Another enjoyment was crocheting afghans. She loved going to the campground to visit her cousin, Pam Croman, and fishing at Lake Nockamixon. She always enjoyed going to the IronPigs baseball games with her nephew James Hill and his wife Lynette. Mabel especially loved cooking for her family, where she created picnics and family get-togethers fully supplied with her amazing rice pudding, cucumber salad and deviled eggs. She had a special touch with PA Dutch recipes, including cabbage and noodles, as well as her unmatched baking abilities including nut rolls, shoofly pies, kiffles and cakes. Mabel was happiest when sewing for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her hands created not only beautiful garments but lasting memories for those she loved, including her dear Gregory.
