Gary A. ‘Pops’ Scott (1936 – 2026)

Gary A. “Pops” Scott, 90, Master Manipulator with a giant ego, of Sebring, Fla., and formerly of Hellertown, Pa., died on Sunday, June 28, 2026, after a brief illness. He was the loving husband of Karen (Jones) Scott, with whom he shared 40 years of marriage and always made laugh. He was predeceased by his first wife, Edith “Totty” (Morton) Scott, with whom he raised his family. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, to Olen and Pearl Elizabeth Scott, Gary came to the Lehigh Valley to earn an electrical engineering degree in 1957 from Lehigh University. While at Lehigh he was a member of several honorary academic societies, the Lehigh Marching Band and a fraternity, the Kappa Alpha Society, in which he continued to be involved as an alumni board member for most of his life. After some early years working out of the area for defense contractors, Gary returned to the Valley to work for Bethlehem Steel in the Data Processing division. After a 20-year career at the Steel, he received his master’s degree in education from Lehigh and taught physics at Southern Lehigh and Northampton Area high schools for 10 years. In his retirement, Gary couldn’t resist the winter warmth of Florida and he and Karen became “snowbirds,” eventually settling there permanently. Gary was an avid reader as well as a crossword and jigsaw puzzle finisher, and was a dominant force in card and board games. He enjoyed giving back to the community in his younger days as a Jaycees member, Cubmaster, church consistory member, long-time church choir member and Trinity Day Camp counselor. While raising his family he enjoyed camping trips, hosting large tennis picnics and his children’s birthday parties, and vacations to the Jersey shore and Florida to visit his parents. Gary loved playing saxophone and clarinet in high school swing and big band groups and rekindled that interest many years later while playing in the Quakertown band and in a little big band in Florida, the Skylarks, with Karen on piano. He had a lifelong love of watching baseball and football as a childhood fan of the Cleveland Indians and much later the Hellertown Royals, as well as Lehigh football and any football game he could find on TV.
