DUI Driver Struck, Damaged Multiple Cars on Main Street, Police Say
A Birdsboro man who was ultimately stopped for erratic driving on Leithsville Road in Lower Saucon Township was driving under the influence of a controlled substance when he allegedly struck and damaged multiple parked cars on Main Street in Hellertown earlier this month, township police said in a news release Tuesday.
According to police, Gustavo Rodriguez-Torres, of the first block of Everts Lane, was stopped just after midnight Sept. 8 after he was observed traveling at only 20 mph and crossing over the center line and fog line on Leithsville Road, with a trail of antifreeze leaking from his vehicle.
As police followed behind him, “while waiting for a safe spot to initiate a traffic stop Gustavo drifted to the right and almost hit a pole,” the news release stated.
When he was finally stopped, police said heavy front end damage to his car was observed. Simultaneously, they added, borough police were dispatched to an accident involving damage to multiple vehicles on Main Street.
“Parts of those vehicles were still lodged in Gustavo’s (vehicle’s) bumper,” township police said, and Rodriguez-Torres is facing charges filed by Hellertown Police related to the damage he allegedly caused.
In Lower Saucon, Rodriguez-Torres was arrested for DUI after failing field sobriety tests, police said.
He later refused chemical testing and thus “will be subject to more severe penalties set forth in section 3804(c) of the Vehicle Code,” the police news release indicated.
