Mercer ‘Grump’ A. Ward (1933 – 2025)

Mercer “Grump” A. Ward, 91, of Hellertown, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at Phoebe Richland Health Care, Richlandtown. He was the beloved husband of the late Dolores L. (Leidich) Ward. Born in Bethlehem on Oct. 9, 1933, Mercer was the son of the late Harold J. Ward and Arlene (Weaver) Ward. He faithfully served our country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War as a proud member of the 101st Airborne Division. Mercer worked in the family business, Ward Oil Company, Hellertown, until 1977. He was a life member of the Hellertown Historical Society and a member of the Edward H. Ackerman Post 397, American Legion, Hellertown. A true Philadelphia Eagles fan, he was devoted to following his team through every season.

SURVIVORS

He is survived by his loving daughter, Patricia E. Ward, at home. He was predeceased by his siblings: Thomas, Janet Spindler and Karen Nemeth.

SERVICES

Family and friends are invited to call from 10 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 19, 2025, at the Heintzelman Funeral Home Inc., 326 Main St., Hellertown. The calling hour will be followed by the funeral service at 11 a.m. Interment will follow at Union Cemetery of Hellertown, with military honors accorded by Edward H. Ackerman American Legion Post 397, Hellertown. A funeral repast will be held at the Carriage House at Heintzelmans immediately following the graveside service.
