In conjunction with National Dairy Month, Giant Food Stores has announced that it’s joining with The Great American Milk Drive to help deliver much-needed gallons of milk to hungry families.
Milk is among the most-need items by food banks, but it is rarely donated to them because it is highly perishable, the supermarket chain said last week in a news release about the fundraiser.
Clients of Feeding America, a domestic hunger relief organization, receive the equivalent of less than one gallon of milk per person per year.
“In honor of National Dairy Month this June, when you pick up a gallon of milk for your family, consider donating one to a local family in need too,” Giant’s director of marketing and external communications John MacDonald said in the release.
From May 31 through June 27, Giant customers can make a $4 donation to their local food bank–which equates to one gallon of milk–whenever they check out.
Tear off pads will be available in the dairy section of all Giant stores, and customers simply need to tear off one of the Great American Milk Drive scan-cards and bring it with them to any register to make their donation.
Customers can also make a donation online at milklife.com/give.
“By entering your zip code, you can ensure that the milk is delivered from the farm to a local Feeding America food bank in your very own community,” the news release said. “The Great American Milk Drive is made possible by the nation’s dairy farmers and milk companies.”
