The Saucon Valley football team is known as a team that plays with heart, but seven teammates showed what big hearts they have when they took time Sunday to help brighten the holidays for local residents who are often forgotten about amid the hustle and bustle of the holiday season.
The football players visited Saucon Valley Manor on Main Street to deliver several cartloads full of poinsettia plants to residents, many of whom are shut in during the holidays and unable to partake in the simple joys of the Christmas season.
Nate Harka, Cody Zrinksi, Mike Kane, Christian Carvis, Steven Good, Trey Polak and Ryan Meyers brought the poinsettias donated by Dan Schantz Greenhouse to the lobby of the assisted living facility in Hellertown for distribution by manor employees.
Brenda Carvis, Christian’s mom, explained that the plants were donated by the greenhouse business, which has been supportive of the football program in the past.
Normally the Saucon players deliver the poinsettias to the manor after their annual end-of-season banquet is held, but this year the banquet’s on hold while the team advances deep into the PIAA state championships.
The Panthers will play Imhotep Charter in the AAA semifinals round at Bethlehem Area School District Stadium (Liberty High School) Friday, Dec. 11 at 7 p.m.
