A Lower Saucon Township Police officer may have helped prevent an accident when he stopped a motorist for allegedly driving under suspension because he recognized him and knew his license was suspended, according to a news release issued Wednesday.

According to police, Nicholas Binczak, of the 1900 block of Pine Court, Lower Saucon Township, was observed by the officer nearly striking another car in the rear and then driving on Black River Road at about 11:20 p.m. Feb. 9.

The officer then initiated a traffic stop “as it was known to the officer that Nicholas was currently suspended,” the release said.

“When Nicholas was stopped he was found to be highly intoxicated,” police said.

They added that his blood alcohol concentration was determined to be .22 percent, which is nearly three times the legal limit of .08 percent.

Binczak has been charged with DUI, according to police.
