Everyone has their own opinion on who has the best cheesesteak in the Lehigh Valley. With so many great spots to choose from, it’s obvious that we all won’t come to a unanimous decision on who reigns supreme.

Matey's Famous Steaks & Pizza is located at 1305 Broadway in Fountain Hill.

But Matey’s Famous Steaks & Pizza in Fountain Hill has proven itself to be a top option over the years. By winning awards like “Best of the Lehigh Valley” for the best cheesesteak (Lehigh Valley Style, 2016), and with a loyal clientele, Matey’s has proven their steak sandwiches are among the best in the area for more than 25 years now.

When first entering Matey’s it feels like you’re taking a step back in time. The restaurant is currently undergoing some renovations. I could see that the walls had a fresh coat of red paint adorned with retro decorations like a Radio Flyer scooter, large pictures of Elvis and Marilyn Monroe, and more memorabilia to take you back in time. The menu, which is conveniently located under the glass topper on the table, contains a mouthwatering variety of classic steak and chicken steak sandwiches, burgers, pizzas and more.

For appetizers, we stuck to some of our fried favorites: fried pickles and cauliflower. The battered and fried pickle slices and cauliflower florets were both served with ranch sauce for dipping. I’m used to always getting fried pickle spears when I order them in restaurants, so getting slices instead was a delicious change. My favorite was the cauliflower though, which held its texture underneath the crispy exterior.

Since Matey’s is known for the cheesesteaks, I already knew going in that I had to see what the fuss was about. As much as I wanted to get a classic cheesesteak I couldn’t pass on all the other great options that were offered on the menu. I went for a California Cheesesteak (I have a thing for mayo on everything) with the sauce on the side. I’m usually the one who covers the cheesesteak with ketchup, but I felt it wouldn’t be right if I didn’t give their sauce a chance. And I’m glad I did. My California Cheesesteak came out covered in crispy lettuce and juicy tomatoes, with a gooey combination of chipped steak and blended cheeses underneath. The sauce was the complete opposite of what I was expecting. It was much thinner than your typical marinara, and soaked into every inch of my crusty roll so I could enjoy all the flavor. I definitely will get the sauce on my cheesesteak next time!

My friend was a little more adventurous than I and went for the Garlic Bread Cheesesteak. It really is as good as it sounds; like you’re eating a cheesesteak on a loaf of garlic bread. And of course with Matey’s signature sauce it all came together. To end our delicious cheesy carb-filled meals we shared a creamy strawberry milkshake. It was a perfect way to end an awesome meal on a hot summer night.

Matey’s Famous Steaks & Pizzas delivers food atmosphere that is definitely worth giving a shot. Whether you’re a cheesesteak lover who’s looking for a new favorite spot or just looking to share a pizza with family and friends, you’re bound to find something that will catch your eye on their menu. After taking a bite of one of their cheesesteaks though, you’ll taste why they’ve won awards and been in the business for so long. I know I’ll be visiting again soon to try another comfort food classic they have to offer.
