More than 170 Saucon Valley second-graders have been busy learning about mail and package delivery at the Hellertown branch of the United States Postal Service over the past few weeks.

Hellertown Postmaster Joe DiRusso said Wednesday that the students have gotten to practice being a mailman/mailwoman by casting letters and scanning parcels; learned about mail distribution; and learned about collecting stamps.

“They are learning to write letters in class now, so their field trip to the Post Office ties in nicely,” DiRusso said.

Each student wrote a letter to a loved one, which they then mailed at the post office.

The students also got to pick out a stamp of their choice to put on their letter, choosing from among Disney villain, Hot Wheels and Scooby Doo stamps.

“They then cancelled the stamp with our date stamper,” DiRusso said.

Each student also took home a packet which included a welcome letter from DiRusso, stickers, paper, a pencil and an envelope so they could write another letter to a loved one.
