Low-income families in Pennsylvania who are struggling to afford heating costs this winter can now apply for assistance through the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). Applications are being accepted by the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services (DHS).

The program provides financial aid provided by the federal government based on household income and federal poverty income guidelines.

To apply, residents can visit the state’s COMPASS website, download an application from the DHS LIHEAP website or complete a paper application and mail it to the Allegheny County Assistance Office at 5947 Penn Ave., 4th Floor, Pittsburgh, PA, 15206.

The current income limits for LIHEAP eligibility are as follows:

Household Size | Income Limit

1 — $22,590

2 — $30,660

3 — $38,730

4 — $46,800

5 — $54,870

6 — $62,940

7 — $71,010

8 — $79,080

After reviewing applications, DHS will notify applicants of their eligibility and the amount of assistance they will receive, if approved. Payments are typically sent directly to the utility company or fuel provider and credited to the applicant’s heating account.

Crisis grants may also be available to provide emergency assistance to individuals at risk of losing their heat. For LIHEAP or crisis grant information, call 1-866-857-7095 or 412-562-0330. Individuals with hearing impairments can call 711.
