Hellertown Rite Aid to Close

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

A drugstore that has been part of the Hellertown community for over two decades will soon close.

Saucon Source confirmed late Friday that the Rite Aid store at 110 Main St. is in the process of closing its doors for good.

An employee said staff learned “last Monday” that the store is closing, but couldn’t say when exactly that will happen.

According to the staff member, the store could close any time between next week and six months from now.

Signs posted near the store’s entrance state that “Rite Aid will no longer honor Rite Aid gift cards or accept returns or exchanges beginning June 5, 2025.” The signs do not include information about the fact that the Hellertown store is closing.

Rite Aid has closed many stores locally and regionally in recent years as part of a 2023 Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing. Rather than closing a large number of its stores all at once, for the most part the Philadelphia-based chain has selectively wound down operations on the individual store level. The company currently operates around 1,200 stores in 15 states.

Other nearby Rite Aid stores that have closed over the past two years include a store on Rt. 309 in Richland Township, Bucks County in September 2023, and a store on W. Third Street in South Bethlehem in January 2024.

A staff member at the Giant in Lower Saucon Township said Rite Aid customers have been transferring prescriptions to the supermarket’s pharmacy since news of the closing first began circulating last week.

Other drugstores located in the Hellertown area include CVS and Yeager’s Pharmacy, which is independently owned.

In addition to prescription and other types of medication, the Hellertown Rite Aid sells candy, snacks, cold drinks, health and beauty products, household items and various seasonal merchandise. The store also boasts a drive-thru pharmacy window.

The Hellertown Rite Aid originally opened as an Eckerd drugstore approximately 20 years ago. A number of homes in the area of Main and Walnut streets–where the store was built–were demolished to make way for the development.
