Ask the Vet: Sun Safety Tips for Pets (Brought to You by Hellertown Veterinary Center)

Ensuring your pets are safe and comfortable during sunny days is essential for their health and well-being.

Here are some sun safety tips to keep in mind this summer:

  1. Provide Plenty of Shade: Whenever you’re outside together, make sure your pets have access to shaded areas where they can escape the sun’s direct rays. This can be a shaded patio, a tree or even an umbrella.
  2. Keep Them Hydrated: Always have fresh, cool water available for your pets to prevent dehydration. Encourage them to drink frequently, especially during hotter parts of the day.
  3. Limit Sun Exposure: Try to keep your pets indoors or in shaded areas during peak sun intensity hours, typically between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
  4. Use Pet-Friendly Sunscreen: For pets with thin coats or exposed skin, apply pet-safe sunscreen to areas like the nose, ears and belly. Avoid using human sunscreen, as it may contain harmful ingredients.
  5. Avoid Hot Surfaces: Asphalt, sand and concrete can become extremely hot and burn your pet’s paws. Walk your pets on grass or dirt paths, and test surfaces with your hand before allowing them to walk on them.
  6. Be Mindful of Heatstroke: Signs of heatstroke in pets can include excessive panting, drooling, lethargy and vomiting. If you suspect that your pet is overheated, move them to a cool area immediately and contact your veterinarian.
  7. Groom Them: Regular grooming can help keep your pet’s coat healthy and manageable, which aids in maintaining their body temperature. However, avoid shaving their fur completely, as it provides protection from the sun.

By following these sun safety tips, you can ensure your pets enjoy the sunny weather safely and happily.
